Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are depicted in popular media. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet space. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in political thought and social theory from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. She had a plan to create a web series on gender representation in video games and found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. The harassment didn't dissuade her. The experience only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won several awards and founded Feminist Frequency as an educational organization that focuses on the way women are depicted in the popular culture stories.
